My latest Obsession~ The Ipsy Bag!!!!
Lately I have been trying out different beauty box subscriptions, trying to find one that is the right fit for me. After reading many rave reviews I decided to try something called the “Ipsy Glam Bag”.
Apparently Ipsy is rapidly growing in popularity because when I subscribed…I was wait-listed. 😦
After several emails, begging and pleading, I finally made my way off the wait list and tried to patiently wait for my first bag. This was really hard to do while watching everyone’s online reveals.
Well, it just arrived this week and I was not disappointed! Here is what it looks like:
In the bag:
~ Bare Minerals 5-in-1 BB Advanced Performance Cream Eyeshadow SPF 15 in “Divine Wine”
This cream eye shadow is supposed to be a primer, brightener, wrinkle filler, and sunscreen all rolled into one. I love Bare Minerals and cream eye shadows, but I am not really impressed with this one. The sample size is generous, but the color is too dark for me and the “lotion-like” consistency is a little thinner than what I prefer.
~ Hang Ten Dark Tanning Oil SPF 8
It’s hard to review tanning oil without using it for several days in a row. I’m still waiting to test drive this one. The bottle is big enough for 1-2 beach days.
~ Mini Tinted Brilliance Balm by Pixi Beauty in “Pretty Pink”
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product. The color is so pretty and natural, and feels so nice on. I don’t think I can live without it now, and I will be ordering the full size when this very generous half size runs out.
~ Sunkissed Bronzer by POP Beauty in “Secret Sunshine”
This bronzer is FULL SIZED and retails for $10…worth the monthly subscription fee alone! I have an entire arsenal of bronzer already, but this one is great and I’m really enjoying using it.
~ Soy Renewal Beach Spray Conditioning & Texturizing Spray by Sexy Hair
I spray it on my damp, waist length wavy hair and scrunch it. I love Beach Sprays and was happy to find this in my glam bag.
The glam bag itself is a very vibrant “electric” pink, well made, and is constructed of soft faux leather. The color is much lighter and brighter than what was pictured in the online reveals I’ve seen. It’s the perfect size to throw in my purse, and I’ve even been using it as clutch because it is so cute.
What I love about Ipsy bag, is the surprise element and the value. You only pay $10 per month for a bag filled with high quality product samples customized to your own specific beauty profile. The bag itself is the same for every lady, but the products differ according to individual needs and coloring.
I like that I get to try fun, new products that I wouldn’t normally wouldn’t find on my own. It’s a fun little adventure every month!
I personally think every woman should get an Ipsy bag each month. It’s a nice little indulgence that costs about the same as a trip to Starbucks and lasts a whole lot longer.
The concept is genius, and really sets Ipsy apart from the competition. This is the one subscription box I wouldn’t dream of canceling.
Julep Maven Review, July 2014
There are a lot of women out there who really love this subscription box, so I took advantage of a free box to give it a whirl.
First off, Julep started out as a nail parlor in Seattle, WA that developed it’s own line of custom tools, products, and polishes for the average gal to get professional results at home. (Hey, that’s me!) Although their primary focus is on nailcare, they do have a selection of cosmetics and other interesting products that I’ll talk about in a minute.
You can sign up to get a Maven box for $24.99 a month for a monthly subscription or for 3 months at $19.99/month.
Depending on your beauty profile you will receive at least one nail polish, and one full sized product of their choosing each month. (valued at $40+)
You can upgrade your subscription to Maven Luxe for a box worth $60+ in value, for $39.99/month monthly or $34.99/month with a 3 month subscription.
When you sign up you fill out a series of questions to develop your beauty profile, and will be placed into five different box categories:
Bombshell-2 nail polishes, 1 full size beauty product
Classis with a Twist-2 nail polishes, 1 full size beauty product
Modern Beauty- Two full sized beauty products
It Girl- 3 nail polishes
Boho Glam-2 nail polishes, 1 full sized products
As you can see, you really have to like nail polish to enjoy Julep!!
As a member you always get a %20 discount on orders and free shipping. There is a rewards program to earn free products by collecting points or rather “Jules”. On the first of each month you have access for a few days to the “secret shop” filled with great deals and are emailed fantastic offers regularly.
For my first box I received the July Bombshell box. When you place your order they offer a small selection of add on items at really good prices. These are the products I mentioned earlier. Julep has it’s own cosmetics, skincare, and hair care line as well as an array of tools. From the variety of discounted add-on items, I picked up a Konjac face sponge for $4.00.(Regularly $12.95)
I had wanted to do a video review, but I am sick in bed with a miserable cold (note the granny blanket in the photo backgrounds) and kiddos climbing all over me, so we took photos instead.
It came in a small cardboard shipping box that was much smaller and lighter than I anticipated.
This is what we saw when we first opened it, a welcome pamphlet explaining the program, a cute little card with a quote from Dolly Parton that says “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”, and a very handy %50 off coupon that I am sure to make good use of.
Inside my box were two nail polishes, one in a metallic Coral hue called Laree, and a really beautiful opaque shade in what I a dubbing “Electric Purple” called Bette.(All Julep’s nail polishes are named for women)
My full sized product this month is the Freedom Polymer top coat.
At first glance, the little man of the house exclaimed “That’s all you got, nailpolish?” I have to say that I was a little disappointed initially.
I moved on to the Konjac Sponge, my $4 add on item that I was pretty excited about.
This face exfoliating, all natural sponge is made from the fibrous root of the Japanese Konjac plant, and is infused with clarifying charcoal. It’s %100 biodegradable and lasts for about 3 months. It has a small loop of black string attached and a small suction cup with a hook for hanging in your shower.
I have a feeling I am going to LOVE using this, and it will end up being a must have item. As you can see in the photo, I have my nails painted in the Coral Polish (Laree). When the dust had settled, and the kids had moved onto Origami and Crochet, I sat there with my sniffles and played with my new products. They are both really, really beautiful and very wearable. I am fairly adventurous with my polish, and have little girls, so I know I will get good use out of them.
That being said, I will return to my initial disappointment. I guess I felt that three bottles of nail polish just doesn’t equate to $40 in value. After polishing my nails, I opened the top coat, gave my nails a coat and let it dry for about ten minutes. My at home manicure looks amazing and is holding up really well despite having done dishes, cleaned, and typing on the computer all afternoon. Maybe these really will deliver that salon quality I was hoping for. The top coat is literally a product I never knew I needed to have, but really makes all the difference in the world. Thank you Julep for letting me know I needed it! If it continues to work, it will become one of those staple items I can’t live without.
Okay, so everybody is talking about something called a MEMEBOX. It has taken me a little bit of research to figure out what they are all about. The company orignitated in Seoul,South Korea and now has it’s headquarters in Palo Alto, CA. They curate Korean Beauty products to create themed beauty boxes. Their three box options are:
The MEMEBOX~ 4-7 Full size to deluxe sample sized trending Korean beauty products, ranging from hair, skin care, cosmetics, to body products.
The SUPERBOX~ 4-7 Full sized products in a specific theme.
The LUCKYBOX~ A combination of products from previously sold out MEMEBOXES.
MEMEBOX differS from other beauty box services because you don’t sign up for a monthly subscription. Unlike programs such as Birchbox, Julep, or Ipsy, where you fill out a beauty profile and are sent a monthly selection of products that are chosen for you, with MEMEBOX you choose the themed box of your choice from the options they have available….before they sell out. (And they sell out quickly!!)
You can also purchase their unusual, one of a kind products in their online store. And I mean UNUSUAL!! I have been dying to try a MEMEBOX since watching one lucky recipient un-box a package of Natural Cocoon Peeling Silk Balls, which are real Silkworm cocoons you soak in water, then use with your fingertips to exfoliate your skin. If that isn’t adventurous enough for you, there is always the large selection of products using snail extract to combat aging and wrinkles. Who knew!!!
I stumbled upon a $15 dollar off coupon code, and not quite ready to smear snail juice on my face, I decided to try one of the new Superboxes with a delicious sounding chocolate theme.
Memebox Special #11 ~ Cacao Cosmetics $23
According to the folks at MEMEBOX, that with it’s high antioxidant content,” raw cacao is guaranteed to make your skin appear dramatically healthier as it locks in nutrients and collagen within the skin, while also removing any excess oil and impurities from the pores.”
Okay, I can get into slathering chocolate all over my skin. But how am I going to keep from eating it?
Below is a spoiler alert. In this box will be this amazing face mask that alone, is valued at more than twice of what I ended up paying for my box.
WondeRuci Cacao Brightening Mask 100g_ this a $38 retail value!
This box starts shipping on July 18th, and I will do an unboxing to let you all see what was inside. My total for this box, with shipping included was $14.99. If you would like to snatch up one of your own, follow the link below and use the promo code TRYMEMEBOX
Feeling a little bit “Cheeky”
I am a huge fan of box subscriptions and have everything from snacks, home goods, and beauty supplies shipped directly to my door. For me it’s a convenient way to avoid getting sucked into the vortex of the local big box store, thus freeing up more time for the beach. Not to mention that it feels like my birthday every time a package arrives.
Recently I came across a company called Unmentionably Cheeky that claimed they will send two pairs of “Fun, Flirty, and Feminine” underwear to you each month for $7, including shipping. Living on an island where everything is expensive, shipping is rarely free…(and currently running out of “good” underwear) I thought this was worth a try. So I gave UM my size (S), My card information, and waited to see if this really was too good to be true.
I was very pleasantly surprised when my panties arrived within two days of subscribing. (talk about lightening fast shipping) They were mailed in a thin, black plastic, padded envelope and wrapped in purple tissue paper. The presentation was nice, but my initial reaction upon peeling back the gold sticker, and seeing my panties was “Really?!”
They seemed like any old, thin-cotton, cheap, ho-hum, grandma panties you could purchase at Walmart.(For the record, I’m more of a Target kind of a gal) Not very impressed I tossed them aside for the weekend, with plans to cancel my subscription when I had the time. “There you go!” I thought. “You get what you pay for!”…Then… I grabbed a pair in a hurry while getting dressed for work on Monday morning.
Well…let me tell you, my first impression was WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! First of all, the cotton is soooo soft and comfortable, and the fit is absolutely adorable. They really are “cheeky”, with a bit of a Brazilian cut, and are unbelievably flattering once on. Not at all the “grandma” panties they initially pretended to be. I have to say, I have been converted, and at this price, and quality…these are a steal!!!
I have yet to wash them, but have a feeling they will be just fine.
I will definitely be keeping this subscription, and cannot wait to see what will arrive next month. Here is a link to sign up (If you hurry, they are currently running a special for $7 a month, with FREE shipping, that you can lock into for life!)
